Morocco is thinking big: Tangier Med is expanding, and Nador West Med is set to begin operations

Morocco is stepping up its port infrastructure development. With the expansion of Tangier Med—which is set to increase its annual capacity by 4.5 million containers—and the upcoming opening of the first terminal at Nador West Med, the kingdom aims to strengthen its position in global maritime trade. The result: massive investments, new jobs, and opportunities for the regions involved.

Tangier Med 3: A New Chapter for Morocco’s Port Giant

The Tangier Med 3 project marks a new phase in the development of the port complex located in northern Morocco, near the Strait of Gibraltar. In 2025, Tangier Med handled more than 11 million containers, confirming its importance in African maritime transport.

The new expansion is expected to add 4.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per year to its capacity. According to official announcements, the complex would thus reach nearly 16 million containers in the initial phase.

The announced financing is based on two pillars:

  • 8 billion dirhams in public investment, or more than 730 million euros.
  • 16 billion dirhams in private investment—more than 1.4 billion euros—contributed by the concessionaires.

A concession agreement has been signed with Maersk-APM, a major player in global maritime transport, to develop the new container terminal.

Construction is set to begin shortly, with the facility scheduled to open in mid-2031. Morocco is counting on this expansion to support the growth of international trade and enhance the appeal of its logistics hubs.

Nador West Med: The New Port Set to Be a Game-Changer in the East

While Tangier Med continues to expand, another project is drawing attention: Nador West Med, located more than 400 kilometers east of Tangier Med.

This port, industrial, and energy complex is set to begin operations soon. According to information shared during a working meeting chaired by King Mohammed VI in Rabat, the project represents approximately 54 billion dirhams in investments for its port infrastructure and its industrial, logistics, and energy platforms.

The plan includes, in particular, two container terminals:

Infrastructure Announced Capacity
First container terminal 3.5 million containers per year
Second container terminal 1.8 million containers per year
Liquefied natural gas terminal Up to 5 billion cubic meters per year
Oil terminal 4 million cubic meters of storage

The second container terminal is expected to open in April 2027, with 8 billion dirhams in private investment announced for this component.

The liquefied natural gas terminal is a first for Morocco. It is intended to enable the country to expand its gas import capacity and strengthen its energy infrastructure.

Jobs and new connections for the regions

These projects extend beyond docks, cranes, and container ships. The development of Nador West Med is also expected to drive economic transformation in the region. Projections indicate 1,400 direct jobs and 20,000 indirect jobs. One factory is already operational in the industrial zone, while three others are under construction.

To support this activity, several transportation infrastructure projects are planned or announced, including a rail link from Selouane, a highway from Guercif, and the modernization of the road network. The goal is to facilitate trade between the port, businesses, and the hinterland. For residents, the benefits will depend in particular on the projects’ ability to create sustainable jobs and provide opportunities for young people in the region.

Mohammed VI Calls for Benefits to Reach Local Communities

The working meeting chaired by Mohammed VI at the Royal Palace in Rabat provided an opportunity to review the progress of the two projects. The king called for the provinces and local communities involved to benefit from the economic benefits of these investments. The issue of vocational training is also among the priorities. Port, industrial, and energy activities require specific skills, ranging from logistics to equipment maintenance.

The challenge, therefore, will be to align the training programs offered with the actual needs of businesses. Without this alignment, some of the jobs created could go to workers from other regions rather than to local youth.

Morocco Aims to Play a Greater Role in Global Trade

With Tangier Med 3 and Nador West Med, the kingdom is pursuing a long-term strategy: to attract investors, facilitate trade, and consolidate its position between Europe, Africa, and major maritime routes. The two projects are complementary. Tangier Med must continue to expand its container transshipment and transport operations, while Nador West Med will combine logistics, industry, and energy infrastructure.

The announced figures give a sense of Morocco’s ambition, although the results will depend on the construction schedule, global demand, and the ability to attract new operators.

For travelers, this transformation also offers a new way to discover Morocco. From the landscapes of the north to the Mediterranean coastline and the rapidly evolving port cities, the country reveals a side that goes beyond its usual tourist destinations. A trip to Tangier or the area around Nador offers a better understanding of how Morocco connects its heritage, its regions, and its ambitions for the future.
